ALL RISK,

NO REWARD.

Counterfeit parts can pose threats to the safety of employees and our industry.

Cummins encounters and fights against counterfeiting every day.

Manufactured counterfeit parts have become increasingly difficult to spot from a genuine product. Examples include products that closely copy the branding, labeling, packaging, barcodes and QR codes to deceive the buyer.

These products are commonly reversed engineered with poor quality materials and loose specifications, which deliver a substandard performance. Additionally, counterfeit parts are not designed or tested to approved Cummins stringent engineering and quality standards. They come with considerable risks such as cracked or broken components, risk of injury and safety, environmental certification risks, and potential serious prosecution. These risks can also result in catastrophic engine damage which can potentially result in significant production losses.

BENEFIT OF GENUINE PARTS

  • Reliability
  • Engine Performance
  • Fuel Economy

COUNTERFEIT IN AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

While customers may not intentionally purchase counterfeited items, by supporting its trade, they are not only buying a potentially dangerous product but encouraging illegal trade that may involve serious criminal activity.

In Australia and New Zealand, the purchase and supply of counterfeit goods is illegal.

Australian Border Force, Australian Federal Police, New Zealand Police, the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand, and the New Zealand Customs Service work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute copyright piracy, intellectual property (IP) crime and counterfeiting of trademarks every day.

Individuals or organisations suspected of importing counterfeit goods in both countries face hefty fines and serious prosecution.

CASE STUDY

A mining operator purchased fuel injectors through a trusted and reputable third-party supplier.

On the surface the injectors appeared to look good and had all the signs of being a Cummins product - only the price was a little cheaper.

Sometime after the injectors were installed on 15 engines, the mining operator began to see the following:

  • Poor engine performance
  • Increased cycle times
  • Significant increase in fuel consumption
  • Increased visible exhaust emissions

An inspection by a Cummins technician revealed the injectors were counterfeit.

On close inspection it was evident sub-standard materials had been used and critical specifications were far outside the design requirements.

Fortunately, the injectors had not caused any terminal damage to the Cummins engines on site and were quickly replaced with Genuine Cummins injectors supplied directly through Cummins.

The few dollars saved buying from a third-party was lost many times over with increased fuel consumption and costly downtime to replace the fake injectors. Purchasing through a third-party or sourcing from an overseas supplier puts you at risk of receiving counterfeit products.

Don’t risk it, always purchase Genuine Cummins Parts.
